War on Love: Germany x Reader [P10]

“It’s too late, we’ll have to defend ourselves from both sides,” Ludwig said quietly. “Activate it.”

“Understood,” you said, lighting the fuse. Dropping it from the tower, you immediately headed down the tower. As you descended the stairs, a sudden white, blinding light shot through the stone windows of the tower, disorientating you for a split second. You steadied yourself, slowly regaining your vision. The shouts from below warned you that the fight for the base had begun.

“_______!” you heard the door being thrown open. “You still here?”

“Yeah, what’s the plan?” you shouted, dashing down to meet Lovino and Ludwig. “(your country)’s troops are invading as we speak!”

Ludwig ran his fingers through his hair. “We’ll stick to the plan. Get rid of the government and then we can deal with them. Lovino, you go check up on Kiku’s troops. They should be infiltrating through the back. _______, follow me. We’ll try to take or destroy as much arsenal as we can.”

“Got it,” Lovino called, disappearing into the smoke. A heavy boom rumbled beneath the ground, nearly knocking you off your feet. A hand steadied you.

“That’s just the first of the bombs,” Ludwig said. “We have no time to waste.”

The two of you crept along the stone walls, hiding in the shadows. “Where do you think they’d put their arsenal?”

“Probably underground,” Ludwig replied, pulling out his rifle. “We’re going to have to fight our way through if there are still soldiers down there.”

“Yea-” A crack of sound interrupted you. You could see a few soldiers in the distance, weapons aimed.

“Ludwig, they’re firing!” you panicked, ducking behind a wall. Ludwig pressed his back against the wall, clicking his tongue in annoyance.

“Looks like we’ll just have to return fire,” he muttered, loading his gun. “Cover me.”

You nodded, loading your gun as he peeped over the wall, returning fire. The empty shells scattered at your feet. He ducked back behind the wall, breathing heavily.

“We’ll need go through that door,” he said, pointing to the wooden door down the hallway. “We can try to lose them in the darkness.”

“Got it!” you shouted. “Go! I’ll cover you!”

He ran towards the door, kicking it down. You aimed carefully, not to waste any bullets. A bullet nicked past your shoulder and arm and you winced, hiding behind the wall. That was too close for comfort.

“You alright?” Ludwig yelled over the explosions in the distance.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” you breathed, holding your arm. You picked yourself up and ran towards him, bullets skipping behind you on the cobblestones.

Unable to stop your momentum, you collided into him, knocking the both of you down the stairs of the entrance. You felt strong arms wrap around your head as the two of you hit the bottom with a heavy thud, echoing in the chamber. Your eyes struggled to adjust to the dim setting. The underground room was lit by a few torches lining the walls, and nothing else.

Realizing you were basically crushing Ludwig under your weight, you sprung off, apologizing profusely. He groaned, pulling himself up and glanced at you.

       “You’re bleeding.”

“O-oh, this?” you placed a hand on your arm. “It’s fine, don’t worr-”

He expertly tore a strip of cloth from his uniform and knotted it against the wound. “It’s my fault. I asked you to cover me. That was reckless.”

“N-no, it’s not your fault,” you replied, hoping he wasn’t feeling too guilty.

Faintly, you could hear footsteps approaching. The two of you shot up and crept into the shadows, waiting for the voices to go by.

       “Where did those two go?”

“I don’t know, we don’t have time, (your country)’s is already attacking!”

You exhaled as the footsteps ran past. “Looks like we’re in the clear for now.”

Ludwig nodded, and you started down the winding passages, cautiously. The air grew heavy and humid. You could smell a metallic scent.

“Ludwig, I think the arsenal room is nearby. There’s gunpowder in the air.”

He stopped in front of a room, sweeping a hand on the floor. When he brought his glove up, it was blackened by the unmistakable powder.

“This is it,” he said, applying pressure to the door handle. There was a loud crack and he slowly turned the knob, opening the door to a room filled with rifles, handguns, bombs, bullets, and more.

“Wow…” you breathed. “This is a lot we’re going to have to destroy, if we can’t take it for ourselves.”

“They won’t be needing these anytime soon anyways,” Ludwig replied, glancing at the barrels of gunpowder. “Dropping a single match could light this entire place up.”

       “Mhm-”

The door shut behind you. Before you could even turn around, an arm came around your neck, locking you in place. You tried to scream, only to have your windpipe cut off from being choked. Ludwig instantly turned around and armed himself.

       “Let her go.”

To your surprise, the person released you, pulling off the mask he was wearing.

       “Ludwig?”

You looked to see Ludwig’s jaw fall slack.

       “Gilbert?”

You looked up to see that your captor had a striking resemblance to Ludwig, except for the silver hair and blood-red eyes. You rubbed your neck, unable to even fathom how both of the brothers were feeling at the moment.

“Why.... are you here?” Ludwig finally managed to get out.

“Ludwig I thought I told you to stay out of the war!” Gilbert shouted, throwing his guns aside and grabbing him by the collar. “What are you thinking? Why’d you join the army?”

“We didn’t,” you interrupted realizing everything could become an extremely messy situation in a matter of seconds. “We’re part of the rebel group.”

Gilbert looked even more perplexed. “Wha… haven’t you been receiving the letters I’ve been sending?”

“Yes, but the last one was at least four months ago,” Ludwig replied with a hint of anger. “Where’d you go?”

“They recruited me into their army, because uh, I swore allegiance to them and they… they’re actually fighting our native country for the right reasons.”

“You’re telling me this now, out of all times? I thought you were dead for god’s sake!” Ludwig said, his fists clenched.

“It doesn’t matter now, does it? We’re reunited. And, they’re willing to let you join their side and fight for them if you aren’t with the government,” Gilbert extended a hand. “You can come with me. Your, uh, girlfriend can come along too.”

Ludwig rubbed his face and muttered, “Everything is turning out so horribly wrong I don’t know what to say.”

Loud explosions rumbled the ground. “Ludwig,” you warned, “we don’t have time. We should just destroy the supplies and go. We can deal with this later.”

Ludwig groaned. “Yeah, that’s the first thing we should do. Gilbert, you help too. Get the gunpowder and dump it.”

“All of it, bruder?” Gilbert asked, tipping a barrel over. “If this goes off while we’re still in here-”

“Let’s not think about it,” you replied sharply, placing all the bombs in a hazardous pile. “We’re set for the room.”

Ludwig nodded, and stabbed a hole in one of the gunpowder barrels. Picking it up, he carried it out the door, leaving a fine trail. The three of you dashed down the hall, the booms above warning you of the growing chaos.

Gilbert kicked the door open leading to the outside, and pulled you out first. Ludwig kicked the barrel down the stairs, and drew a match from his pocket. He swiped it, lighting the stick and dropped it, watching it fall and ignite the trail of powder.

He slammed the door shut. “ We need to go higher up. And farther.”

“Lovino just contacted me,” you said, pulling out the radio. “The situation isn’t looking good. The rebels aren’t going to hold their ground any longer.”

“We don’t have a choice at this point but to make do,” Ludwig replied, climbing up the stairs leading to the top of the walls of the base. “Tell him and Honda to get rebel recruitments as fast as possible.”

“Dumbass, Priv. Honda isn’t with me right now. He disappeared somewhere I don’t know. I can’t really seem to get ahold of anyone the explosions here are too loud-”

The static drowned out the rest of Lovino’s voice. You exchanged glances with Ludwig grimly.

Just then, the place where you had just left exploded violently, knocking all of you off your feet. A few smaller explosion followed shortly after, angry flames coming to life within the smoke. Gilbert laughed nervously.

“That was one helluva explosion, I hope your buddies weren’t caught in it,” Gilbert said, looking past the wall.

The entire section of the wall there was completely destroyed, reduced to a pile of rubble. You thought of the bodies trapped in it and shuddered.

“Hey, there’s someone down there waving a white flag at us.” Gilbert commented, peering over the wall that looked on the outside of the base.

“Feli?!” you shouted, looking over the edge. Sure enough, he was waving to you, hollering. “Hang on, we’ll get you!”

You pulled out some rope from your sack and threw it down. Tying the other end to the wall, the rope was securely attached, and Feliciano grabbed ahold of the rope, using it to pull himself up.

       “Is he okay?” Ludwig asked.

“Yeah, he should be able to climb up, I’ll lend a hand if he needs it,” you replied.

Gilbert smiled, as a loud gunshot brought all of you back to your senses.

Kiku stood a few meters away from you, the smoke rising steadily from his rifle. Gilbert touched his chest in disbelief, a crimson red soaking through his shirt and staggered backwards, before falling off the edge of the wall.
